Silver City Watershed Keepers celebrates World Water Day on March 22 and 23

On March 22 & 23 the Gila Resources Information Project and the Silver City Watershed Keepers will hold a two-day event for the internationally-celebrated World Water Day. On Friday, come to the Bayard Public Library between noon and 5:30 pm and learn about water issues around the world and in our own backyard through fun interactive games and activities. On Saturday from 9 am to noon, give back to our community and the Silver City watershed by picking up trash, planting natives and testing San Vicente Creek water quality in the Big Ditch.

World Water Day has been held on March 22nd annually, since its inception in 1993. The event was initiated by the United Nations General Assembly due to a concern over increased demand for water access, allocation, and services at the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development. World Water Day strives to bring attention to the importance of freshwater and the advocacy for sustainable management of freshwater resources.

This year’s World Water Day theme, ‘Leaving No one Behind’, focuses on water as a human right. Whoever you are, wherever you are, water is your human right. Access to water underpins public health and is therefore critical to sustainable development and a stable and prosperous world.

Here in Grant County, local communities are working together on regionalizing the water distribution system to ensure that everyone in Central Grant County has a secure water supply for the future. The Grant County Regional Water Supply Project will improve and increase access to public water supplies through a new well field located near the Grant County Airport and an inter-community regional pipeline providing a bulk water supply to 26,000 people in Hurley, North Hurley, Bayard, Santa Clara, Silver City, and the public water systems of nearby water associations. The inter-community regional pipeline would be supplied from the Silver City municipal water system on one end and from a new well field at the Grant County Airport on the other, developing much better water supply security and resilience from two distinct sources of supply.

Schedule of Events:

Friday, March 22, Noon - 5:30pm at the Bayard Public Library.

Enjoy a FREE afternoon of fun for all ages at the Bayard Public Library.. Learn about water issues around the world and in our own backyard through fun interactive games and activities, such as water quality testing, water conservation, films and more. Food and refreshments will be served.

Saturday, March 23, 9:00 am -Noon at the Murray Ryan Visitor Center, Silver City

Join the Silver City Watershed Keepers for a Community Action Day and help us take care of our watershed and water resources. Participants will meet at 9 am at the Murray Ryan Visitor Center parking lot and will have the choice of three workshop groups: water quality monitoring of San Vicente Creek; erosion control through planting of natives; and trash clean up. All projects will end at noon. Volunteers are encouraged to bring water, sunscreen, and gloves. Snacks will be provided.

Created in 2010 by the Gila Resources Information Project, the Silver City Watershed Keepers is a citizens’ water resources stewardship program that engages community members in protection and restoration of the Silver City Watershed.
