Its been a year since San Vicente Creek was confined to culverts under the 90 Bridge and the trailhead obliterated but Tuesday morning work was begun to free her and create a new path, trailhead and landscaping. Silver City's own Stream Dynamics is the lead with IHC, Interstate Highway Construction, the Bridge Builders, providing heavy equipment and some manpower.

Above Van Clothier and Theo of Stream Dynamics work on the outlet end of the 2 culverts where huge piles of boulders had been places as retainers of the fill that leveled the work area for the heavy equipment used in the destruction of the old bridge and construction of the new.

A second excavator and a loader, operated by IHC, work on the inlet end. When a channel is dug the full length of the culverts and dirt and rocks cleared away the pipes will be lifted out in sections starting at the outlet end so the heavy equipment will not have to be driving in the creek bed.

By Tuesday evening the equivalent of a couple of dump trucks of boulders had been removed exposing the outlet end of the culverts. The work is expected to last at least 2 weeks and was delayed until the whole bridge had been painted.

After a certain amount of work on the creek has been completed IHC will install a water drainage system down-spout to bring bridge surface water down to the creek. Water flowing north on Highway 90 to the south end of the bridge drops into a built-in oil/silt filtering system before moving down the drainage system to the creek, more on this as the down-spout gets installed.

Work can be observed from the parking lot at the North end of the bridge, access to the work area under the bridge is restricted.

Reminder: the wrap up meeting on the bridge project will be Wednesday, May 18 at 6:00 pm, County Admin. Bldg.
This is an opportunity to provide input and voice concerns about the creek rehab as well as bridge project issues.
