Play Street “Pilot” a Community Building Success
North Georgia Street Neighbors Enjoyed Music, Games, Food and Friendship

Saturday District 2 Councilor Lynda Aiman-Smith, along with friends from North Georgia Street and other Silver City neighborhoods danced the “broom dance” to the music of Bayou Seco. Georgia Street between 13th and Hwy 180 was transformed from traffic thoroughfare into a “play street,” featuring music, dance, street art, face painting, food and camaraderie, all designed to bring neighbors together, give children a chance to play independently in a familiar space, and ultimately build community. Nearly 160 people attended the four-hour event.

“This is great,” said Ray Lozano of 1315 N. Georgia. “I’ve had a chance to meet my neighbors and get to know them a bit. I hope we can schedule this regularly.”

Councilor Aiman-Smith called the event a great success, and pledged to work with town staff to develop a simple process so that neighborhoods throughout Silver City are able to organize their own such events.

“I was thrilled because everyone seemed to have such a great time; folks were really working together,” she said. “Big kudos to everyone in the neighborhood who really came out in force and pitched in. The Town blocked the street and supplied porta potties, but everything else was done by volunteers.”

North Georgia Street neighbor Jamie Thomson shared his hand-built pizza oven, and helped his friends and neighbors create their own pies. “Kids should be able to play in the streets; that should be the default,” he said. “A neighborhood that takes care of itself is the basis for everything. It’s how we take care of one another that really counts.”
