The threat of the destruction of the Gila Wilderness is being felt by anyone with a heart and all of us, whether we acknowledge it or not, would be terribly harmed by its loss. We are children of the this wilderness. We are responsible for this sanctuary; The Divine has left it to our care. Aldo Leopold left us the wisdom to understand that the Gila is an essential part of our survival. If we are not vigilant on its behalf, it will disappear, and us along with it. We are the canaries in the cage; as goes the forest, so do we.

To organize, to protest, to inform our elected representatives and the media, are the only responsible actions we can take. Short of Stinger missiles, we have few cards to play. As has been discussed before, aircraft are the dinosaurs of 'national security'. Look how well they protected our elections. The actions of the USAF are indefensible. Our lives would be more secure if they bombed themselves.

I really want to veer off into our current political insanity but I have to RESIST. Defending the the Gila and the tatters of our democracy are tantamount. If we do not stave off the horror at our door, all will be lost. Really, ALL will be lost.

Support (and attend, if you can) the action planed for today. But it will take more than a fist in the air to stop this. It will take thousands of fists itching for a fight.

I met a recently retired Air Force flight controller from Holloman yesterday. He's aware of the training flights they do for Afghanistan and that area. He said there is plenty of open space for them to train over as they've been doing without disturbing our Gila Wilderness or any other wilderness area. Thought it was an interesting conversation. Not that it will make one beans worth of difference though.
