YOU ARE INVITED!
To join in co-creating Silver City's first Play Street as the project for the Territorial Charter Volunteer Day for District 2.

WHAT IS A TERRITORIAL CHARTER VOLUNTEER DAY?
The Town of Silver City is still governed by our original Territorial Charter, granted to form us as a municipality with particular powers, in 1878. One of the powers in the Territorial Charter gives the Mayor the power to conscript residents of the town to work on projects benefitting the town! So back in the late 1800s, the Mayor could set up a group and get them working on digging waterways and leveling roads….but that is not what we are doing now.
Instead, the Mayor asked each Town Councilor to come up with a community improvement project in their district. The project in District 2 is to do a pilot of a Play Street, on August 4 from 10am-2pm, on Georgia St. between Hwy 180 and 13th St.

WHAT IS A PLAY STREET?
A play street is a street that is closed to motorized traffic during certain hours (or sometimes for weekends) so that it can be used as a play area. Play streets offer children the opportunity to play outside in a familiar neighborhood. As well, Play Streets offer community members a chance to meet, enjoy recreating together, and build a sense of neighborhood and connection.
We plan to have a mobile pizza oven, and residents will roll out grills, so bring items you want to grill, and your favorite pizza toppings. Bring food and non-alcoholic drinks to share!

PLEASE VOLUNTEER – IT TAKES A COMMUNITY TO MAKE A PLAY STREET WORK.
Let’s have this project in District 2 be a success in terms of co-creating a Play Street for all to enjoy! Play Streets have a growing body of research in urban and community planning, because of their positive impacts on the health of kids, and developing networks in neighborhoods.

Even though the Play Street will be held in District 2, all residents are invited to participate.
Contact Maria Stacy (575) 597-7028 or mstacy@silvercitymail.com
Maria has a list of small, easy-to-do tasks that anyone can do. Help make it fun to be a participant in co-creating Silver City's pilot Play Street!
